When Direction Changes: The Journey That Led Us To South Sudan

Sometimes, the direction of the work changes in a single moment. For ANIDA, that moment came through a story that was difficult to hear and impossible to ignore.

A pastor shared how he lost his unborn child due to the lack of basic medical support. That moment shifted everything.

Up until then, our focus had been elsewhere. Plans were already forming in a different direction. But as this need came into view, it became clear that this was where we were being led.

And in all things, we give thanks to God, who orders our steps, even when the path is unexpected. In response, support was mobilized. Incubators and oxygen equipment were delivered to a hospital in Aweil.

And almost immediately, lives began to change. In honor of the life that was lost, many more now have the chance to live, to take their first breath, and to see another day.

Over the years, our work has consistently focused on removing barriers so people can access real opportunities. Children are supported to stay in school and keep learning. Women are equipped to build stable sources of income.

Communities gain access to essential resources that improve daily life. This is the work we know. This is the work we have learned to do well. And it is this experience that shapes how we see South Sudan.

Because what we encountered there was not just a moment of need. It was a clear indication that the challenges go deeper, and that meaningful, lasting impact will require more than a one-time response. It will require presence. It will require structure. It will require long-term commitment.

Establishing in South Sudan means bringing everything we have learned, and applying it where it is needed most. Not just to respond, but to build. Not just to intervene, but to strengthen systems over time. Not just to start something, but to sustain it.

That is what makes this next step significant. And for those considering how to be part of this journey, the opportunity remains. Because what lies ahead is greater than what has already been done.

This is meaningful work. It is work that changes lives. It is work that requires commitment. And it is work that continues, because people choose to be part of it.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
