When A Moment Became A Movement: How The South Sudan Vision Began

The journey toward South Sudan began with a moment that was difficult to ignore. At a leaders’ conference, a story was shared about a pastor in South Sudan who had lost his unborn child due to the lack of access to basic medical equipment, specifically an incubator. It was a deeply personal loss, but it also pointed to a larger reality within the healthcare system.

In response, funds were raised through ANIDA to support the provision of incubators to hospitals in South Sudan. It was a practical and immediate way to respond to a clear need. But as part of our approach, we do not act on solutions alone. We take time to understand the context behind them. Through engagement with local contacts and further assessment, we began asking a simple question: Is this the need, or is it part of a much larger challenge?

What we discovered was broader than expected.. While access to medical equipment was important, it became clear that communities were facing deeper, interconnected barriers. Challenges in healthcare, education, and community infrastructure were not isolated issues. They were part of a wider system that required a more comprehensive and long-term response. This shifted the conversation.

What began as a targeted intervention opened the door to something bigger. It led to deeper discussions about what it would mean not just to respond to one need, but to walk alongside communities in a more sustained and structured way. With the experience ANIDA has gained across Ghana, Liberia, Jamaica, and the Philippines, we began to see a possibility.

If we were able to formally establish and register in South Sudan, we would not only respond to immediate needs, but also contribute to longer-term change by removing barriers that affect children, families, and communities as a whole. What started as a single moment of response has now grown into a clearer vision. And it is this vision that we are now preparing to step into.
