How The ANIDA HFT Child Sponsorship Program Has Evolved

A Compassionate Beginning

The ANIDA Hope for Tomorrow (HFT) Child Sponsorship Program began from a place of deep compassion and a desire to respond to the needs of vulnerable children. Its story started in Koforidua with just five children who had lost their parents under very difficult circumstances.  When the stories of these children reached ministries abroad, they deeply touched the hearts of Senior Pastors Drs. Samuel H. & Rose Donkor, along with their congregation. The quiet struggles these children were facing inspired them to take action. In response, the Hope for Tomorrow program was launched in Ghana. At the time, it was known as “The Silent Cry,” a name that captured the hidden pain experienced by many vulnerable children and families. The program was created to respond to that cry by providing consistent care, encouragement, and educational support.

Growth Through Compassion and Partnership

What began as a small act of compassion soon began to grow. Members and supporters of the All Nations Full Gospel Churches in Canada became aware of the children’s needs and expressed a strong desire to help. Through their generosity, more children were gradually enrolled in the program. As sponsorship support increased, the program expanded beyond its original five children. Over time, the HFT program reached more communities across Ghana, including Takoradi, Wenchi, Bremang Asikuma, Kumasi, and Agogo.  As the number of children increased, the impact became clear. Children who once faced uncertain futures began receiving school supplies, educational support, and encouragement. For many families, sponsorship created stability that allowed children to remain in school and focus on learning. However, as the program expanded across many regions, leadership began to notice logistical and operational challenges. Managing children across several distant communities made coordination and monitoring more difficult.

Strengthening the Program for Greater Impact

To improve program efficiency and strengthen the support provided to children, ANIDA leadership made a strategic decision. Instead of continuing to operate across many regions, the program would be consolidated within one region to allow for better coordination and monitoring. Today, all children enrolled in the HFT program in Ghana are concentrated in the Eastern Region, primarily around Koforidua and nearby communities. Currently, the program supports approximately 323 children within this region. This focused approach allows the program team to provide stronger supervision, improved communication with families, and more consistent engagement with schools and local communities. It also enables the ANIDA Ghana team to build deeper relationships with the children and their caregivers.

An important tradition within the HFT program has been the annual gatherings organized to celebrate the children and their progress. During these events, children come together to build friendships, share experiences, and reflect on their educational journeys. They also write thank-you letters to their sponsors, expressing gratitude for the support that makes their education possible. These moments strengthen the connection between sponsors and children while reminding the children that they are supported and valued.

Expanding Hope Across Nations

As the success of the HFT program in Ghana became increasingly evident, ANIDA’s leadership began exploring opportunities to extend the same model to other countries where vulnerable children could benefit from similar support. The first country to adopt the program after Ghana was Jamaica, beginning with a small group of children in St. Elizabeth. The program later expanded to communities such as Portmore and Goshen. The early success of the program in Jamaica was guided by passionate expatriate coordinators from Canada and the United Kingdom, whose dedication helped establish a strong foundation.  The HFT program later expanded to Liberia, particularly in Nimba County in the city of Ganta. The initiative was also successfully implemented in the Philippines, where the late coordinator Mrs. Marilyn Manago played a key role in establishing the program. Today, the HFT program in Kidapawan City supports about 180 children.

From its humble beginning with five children in Koforidua, the ANIDA HFT Child Sponsorship Program has grown into a multi-country initiative that continues to transform lives. Many children who once depended on sponsorship support have now completed high school and university. Some have become professionals, while others serve as strong pillars within their families and communities. The evolution of the HFT program stands as a powerful reminder of what compassion, commitment, and partnership can achieve. What began as a response to the silent cries of a few children has grown into a movement of hope, empowering hundreds of children to pursue education, build brighter futures, and become agents of positive change in their communities.
