For the Love of Reading: ANIDA’s Summer Booktopia

This summer, ANIDA will be running a reading program called Summer Booktopia in partnership with Indigo.

ANIDA is an organization that values the impact of education on the lives of children, both locally and internationally. To echo the famous author Tomie DePaola, “those who can read, can learn anything”, we believe that academic success and far beyond depends on our ability to read correctly and independently. This is why we strongly give credence to reading as a fundamental key to success in education.

In addition, according to a report by Scholastic Canada, many kids (84%), and even more parents (96%) believe in the value of summer reading and agree that reading books during the summer will help them during the school year (Scholastic, 2021). However, for low-income families, buying books for their children to read during the summer may be a significant challenge.

As a result, ANIDA will be running a reading program called Summer Booktopia in partnership with Indigo. The goal of this campaign is to engage youth in the community and encourage children to make reading a part of their daily routine. Thanks to Indigo, children of all ages will have access to books from a diverse array of authors and genres.

The Summer Booktopia campaign will involve various groups in the community. Throughout the months of July and August, ANIDA will work with local community partners to collect and distribute books. In addition, ANIDA will host a book sorting event on Sunday June 27th from 1-5 pm where volunteers will be able to organize and pack various educational materials to be given to the children. Visit anida.org/pages/volunteer to sign up for this opportunity! Individuals, groups, and businesses will all have the opportunity to work together and contribute to the success of the program.

ANIDA will also engage with the community through a social media campaign, including Instagram Live book readings and raffles (follow @anidaorg on Instagram to stay updated)!

In order to monitor the progress of the campaign and receive feedback from families, the children will be required to complete a reading report that summarizes their learnings from the books.

Throughout Summer Booktopia, families from all across the North York community will be able to come together, share their experiences, and unite through a love of reading!
